Athena sat in the shaded corner of the school she usually inhabited and watched her friend Zoe, once again, lying on the grass sunning herself. When Athena squinted to make out details she could see the satisfied smile on Zoe's face. What the fuck.
Jon, Zoe's brother, was also there, once again, under the tree, staring at his sister. Athena couldn't figure the connection between Jon and Zoe's new behaviour. Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe he was just watching because he was concerned for his sister.
One thing Athena did notice, however, was that Jon was different. It wasn't that he was wearing different clothes, or had grown, or anything like that. It was more like he now had an air of authority. Something about him seemed to speak of command. She shook her head. What was going on?
A memory came to her, unbidden, of walking that morning in the school hallway and seeing Jon drop one of his books as he passed her. Instantly she stopped her conversation, turned around, picked up the book and brought it to him. She remembered the feeling of satisfaction when he thanked her.
She also remembered the temptation to ask if she could carry it for him to his next class.
What the fuck.
She turned from the scene, stalking inside, simultaniously hoping she would avoid Jon and that she would run into him. She obviously had some things to work out.
