The world slowly started to come into focus.
She was in her underwear! Karyn's face immediately turned beet red -- no one could see her like this, she'd be the butt of jokes for the rest of the school year! Being seen was enough, but heaven forbid if someone pulls out their camera phone. She'd have to transfer schools!
She ducked down, covered herself up the best she could, and put her head on a swivel to look for an easy exit.
The walls were grey cement, the floor was some kind of rubbery matting. Oh my god, she was kidnapped! Someone had kidnapped her, took her clothes, and put her into this back room! That's when she spotted the exit sign. Karyn knew she had to make a break for it, or she'd be stuck in this grey room for the rest of her life.
She got up, covered herself as best as she could, and ran. Ran right for the exit door, and right as she got out of the back room, ran right into the arms of Jen.
"Karyn, I saw you cowering down in the back room over there. What's going on with you? Oh, I've got an idea what it is. Stand up and follow me, it's not like you've got anything I haven't seen before."
Karyn felt relief. Having Jen around didn't make her feel as self-conscious. She stood up slowly and followed Jen down the hallway and into a side-door.
The room was painted pink, the black striping she knew from somewhere, but couldn't place it. Wooden floor, white shelving units with drawers, black rounded tables. Where was she?
That's when Jen held them up. Two tiny pieces of fuchsia with white mini-polka dots and little bows in the center of each. And Karyn's mouth dropped.
"You'd look so hot in these, K-Bee."
"But I'm already wearing underwear."
"Yeah, but those are so ugly. If someone saw you in these, at least they'd be talking about you a lot differently. Besides, you're always telling me about how what's under your clothes is most important, especially if you give the boys a peek."
Almost instantly, Karyn had them on.
She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled. Jen was right, she did look hot. Jen was always right.
"Give me a walk you babe, I want to check you out from all angles!"
Karyn turned away from the mirror and focused on Jen at the other end of the store and started walking over, hands on her hips, like she had seen on TV once. It was important to look like a model when you're walking, she told herself. The clack, clack of her heels against the wood floor added to the effect.
As she walked forward, details began to fade out and others in. Jen was still in the room, but she was sitting down at the end of a long platform that Karen was on. Some lights got brighter, and others darker with each step. The light music turned to a deep bass beat, so she started walking left-right left-right, in tune with the notes.
Karyn felt something large brush against her shoulder. When she carefully checked behind her, all she saw was an eyeful of white feathers. When did she put on wings? It didn't matter. All that did was that she kept going.
Pretty soon, there was no room - just chairs on each side of the platform, filled with, could it be, all the people from her high school? All eyes were on Karyn, including Mr. Elwood, the science teacher that seemed to always give the flirty girls a good grade. But where was Jon? It didn't matter. He was probably out somewhere moping around. She cracked a quick smirk and decided to give them all a show; slowed down, just to make sure everyone got a good look at her before she got to the end of the platform. Why was she so worried about them before? They were all just little pervs anyway, weren't they?
At the end of the platform, she stopped, and flashbulbs began to go off. The lights were almost blinding, so she gave them what they wanted. Karyn twisted her knee just so, looked up at the crowd, and showed off her teeth in the biggest, brightest smile in her arsenal.
After giving the crowd a strut backstage, Jen called out to her.
"Oh my god, K-Bee! You're all over everyone's Twitter feeds! They can't stop talking about you! They're even posting pictures. Don't you just love the attention?"
Truth be told, Karyn did, and got that warm feeling up her body again. She wanted that kind of attention all the time. If strutting around in cute underwear was what did it, well then, she'd have to go shopping.
She scrolled down her Twitter page, as the colors began to meld together and fade.
