Later that evening, Fred decided he couldn't wait any longer. He had to know how Mikey and his loser friend did what they did. It wouldn't be easy to get at Mikey, however. It was common knowledge that losers like Mikey didn't trust Fred and his friends. So, he thought up some other way of getting in.
He put on his plainest T-shirt and jeans and went across the street to Mikey's house and rang the doorbell.
Mikey opened the door, expecting Tommy or one of his other friends. He did not expect Fred Orr.
"What do you want, Fred?"
He whined. "I'm really worried. Ms. Warren is giving that nasty science test tomorrow and I'm just not ready for it. I need your help!"
Mikey sighed. "Why don't you ask one of your friends to help instead?"
"I know how much you like science." That was true, Mikey did like it. More science fiction than science, though. "I thought you'd be the perfect person to help me. Please help me, please!"
Mikey was beginning to get a headache and Fred's uncharacteristic whining was not helping. He almost preferred getting beat up, by comparison. He figured he had to help or he would never get any peace. "Fine. Come on up to my room."
They went up the stairs and into Mikey's room. This place is so pathetic, Fred thought, looking around the bedroom. He did take note, however, that Mikey quickly stashed something under his pillow ...
"Could you get me a drink, Mikey?"
"I thought we were here to study," he shot back.
"I would get it myself, but I don't know where you keep them."
"Fine," he muttered, as he went downstairs.
"Now's my chance," Fred said, grinning. He lifted the pillow and found a coin with a small hole in it. That must have been it!
"I just need to test it ..." he muttered to himself. "I wish ..."
