After only a few seconds, Jon looked in the mirror at a complete stranger. He didn't look anything like himself. In fact, he looked like woman. A young woman. Although, the more he looked at his reflection, the more familiar the woman was. Then it dawned on him. He spun around and faced his grandfather.
"You turned me into your assistant?"
"My assistant?" he asked Jon, confused. "Jon, this woman doesn't exist. Not until now, anyway."
"What are you talking about? This is the day you introduced Laura to us."
"How did you know I was going to call you Laura?" he asked Jon. Then he grabbed his forehead. "Of course, how could I be so stupid?"
"What?"
"Your memories are changing to fit the new timeline."
"But if you use the stone, your memories aren't supposed to change."
"I didn't use the stone to change you, Jon. Not directly, anyway. I belong to this time period so my memories don't change. But you belong in the future, so your memories have to change so that you remember this new timeline."
"This is confusing."
"Grandpa?" the younger Jon asked, walking into the bedroom. "Who's she?"
"Uh, this is Laura. My assistant. We're both leaving on the expedition tomorrow. I just thought I'd show her my family before we leave."
"Uh ... hi," young Jon said to "Laura".
"Hello," Laura said. "Did someone say something about dinner?"
"Yeah. My mom made lasagna. Did you want some?"
"Sure," Laura said.
They all left the bedroom and walked downstairs. It was strange, but Jon did remember walking back up to his bedroom and finding his grandfather talking with a young woman in his bedroom. It was weird realizing that he was that woman.
