When they had a moment alone, Sarah began to make "suggestions", starting with make-up.
"You know what would look really cool on you?" Sarah asked.
"No, what?" Amber asked back.
"Black nail polish."
Amber looked oddly towards her friend. "Really? That sounds kind of ..."
"It would look cool," Sarah said, a tad more forcefully.
Amber blinked. "Yeah. Yeah, I think you're right." She walked over to the assortment of nail polish being sold and picked up one for black polish. She looked at the box and smiled. Sarah was smiling too. So far, so good.
"And black lipstick. That would be so totally awesome," Sarah said, trying to sound perky. She was sick of it, but she had to maintain a preppy attitude.
Amber raised an eyebrow. Was Sarah serious? Black lipstick ... that was like something the Goths ...
Sarah saw Amber's expression. Maybe she pushed things too far, too fast. Or maybe she needed to push them further, harder. "Black lipstick is cool," she said, looking directly at Amber.
"Uh, yeah. Yeah, you're right. Black lipstick is cool. But ..." Amber trailed off. "I don't ... I don't think that the others ..."
"Fuck the others," Sarah mumbled. She cleared her throat, then tried again. "You don't care what the others think. You want to do what you want, not what everyone else wants."
"Uh, yeah. I don't care what my friends think. I'll do what I want to do."
Sarah took a step back and smiled.
"Hey, girls. What are ya up to?" Jessica asked, approaching them.
"Nothing. Just looking for new make-up," Sarah said.
Jessica shrugged, then walked off towards Melissa and Tiffany.
Amber grabbed a tube of black lipstick, then both she and Sarah rejoined the group.
