Jon's mother (Jane) hung up the phone. She just got done talking with Jon.
"What am I going to do with you?" she asked Zoe, who was sitting at the kitchen table.
Zoe rolled her eyes.
Jane slammed her hand down on the table. "Don't roll your eyes at me! You better start getting your act together or there's going to be consequences." She sighed. "Why can't you be more like Jon? He respects authority."
Suddenly, time seemed to freeze for a few seconds. And during those seconds, Jane became just as gothic-looking as Zoe, wearing a long black tattered witch-type dress and black boots.
Since her mom was now just like her, Zoe no longer rebelled against her.
When time resumed, Zoe looked up at her mom and grinned. "I'm so glad it's finally spring break. I don't have to go to school for a whole week."
"I don't know why you don't just skip school. That's what I did when I was your age."
"Mom, I could get in trouble. The teachers ..."
"Fuck the teachers," Jane said.
Zoe smiled. "Did I ever tell you that you're the best mom ever?"
