Jon's mother (Jane) hung up the phone. She just got done talking with Jon.
"What am I going to do with you?" she asked Zoe, who was sitting at the kitchen table.
Zoe rolled her eyes.
Jane slammed her hand down on the table. "Don't roll your eyes at me! You better start getting your act together or there's going to be consequences." She sighed. "Why can't you be more like Jon? He respects authority."
Suddenly, time seemed to freeze for a few seconds. And during those seconds, Zoe lost all of her gothic look, turning into a very normal teenage girl, similar (actually) to Jon's friend Karyn.
When time resumed, Zoe smiled at her mom. "This is gonna be a great spring vacation. I can't wait to go swimming and to the park and ..."
"Whoa, hold on there," Jane said. "You've got a whole week off. There's plenty of time to do whatever you want."
"I know. I'm just excited."
"I'm so glad that I have a daughter like you. Did I ever tell you that?"
"Oh, Mom," Zoe said, blushing.
