"I wish I knew why Jon was acting so weird."
That flash. Karyn was prepared for it. But she wasn't prepared for... turning around to see that one wall of her bedroom was now pink.
There it was, spelled out in letters that looked like they belonged on someone's chic wedding invitation: Karyna.
Her jaw dropped. Her name had gained a letter, and her bedroom decor had shifted to something she definitely would not have chosen.
Jon looked at the wall and then at her in speechless shock.
"Gosh, that thing is..." She had a thought, but somehow she lost it. "Kind of amazing," she tried to finish the sentence. She looked around and saw that there was a pink and white book on her desk that she'd never seen before.
"What's this?" Her head was spinning. She inspected its front cover, which had a sparkly K on a pink background. Opening it, she noticed it was a diary. Her handwriting was the same, but there was a lot of talk about someone named Bubbles. She pulled Jon over, but he was just as confused.
Then they turned to a page with a photo pasted in. It was unmistakable. The two of them in complementary, frilly outfits. They looked like they were at some kind of event. Underneath were written the words "Karyna ❤ Bubbles".
"What does that stone—" Karyna caught herself, losing that train of thought again. "What a cute photo! Dance class, maybe?"
"Focus, Karyn," Jon replied with some alarm. He hoped Bubbles was some sort of nickname. "...What do you remember? About what I typically wear?"
"...I know you wouldn't wear a skirt to school, but you wouldn't dress like that even at home? i know what the stone said, but... It's just weird to think of you in pants all the time."
This stone seemed to be playing tricks on Karyn...or was that Karyna? He pulled out his ID from his purse, not realizing he knew already where it was in a handbag he hadn't seen until today.
Jonna Gibson, it read. There was some relief... His name wasn't Bubbles. But it wasn't Jon, either. "Look..." He held it up for Karyna to see.
"So what? Being called Jon doesn't suit you all that much."
Their discussion was interrupted by a distant shouting voice. "Girls! Time for dinner!"
"Oh, that's Mom," Karyna replied. "We can come back to this later."
