The Devil was trying to make him leave, by doing something horrible to whomever was screaming. And all Jon could do was stand his ground and bare it.
But after nearly a minute of hearing the continuous screaming, Jon decided he couldn't do it. The Devil would keep on torturing people. Innocent people who didn't deserve that fate. All Jon had to do was leave the circle. Yes, that would mean that the Devil could affect him again, but now it seemed like such a small price for saving so many other people from certain agony.
Jon was the one that made the bet. It was his responsibility to take care of the situation.
With one step, Jon moved to the outside of the circle.
And the screaming stopped.
