"Oh, Jon," Karyn said, embracing him and pulling him down til they were both sitting. "Give me the stone if you don't think you can handle it. I can hold onto it. I promise I won't make a wish."
"I can't," Jon said, showing Karyn his hand.
A few minutes later, as Jon finally regained his composure, the one calling himself Lucifer appeared before them.
"Oh my god, Jon! You were telling the truth!"
The guy with the red gloves bent over, so his face was only inches away from Jon's. "You told someone. That's a no no." Jon thought he might choke on the guy's breath, which seemed like a mix between charcoal and horse manure. The guy may have been well-dressed, but he sure needed a breath mint.
"You never said I couldn't," Jon said.
"Oh, did I forget to mention that?" the guy said, standing back up and grinning.
"That's not fair! You can't change the rules after you make the deal."
"Oh, can't I? I'm Lucifer. I can do whatever I want."
Jon looked fearfully at Karyn.
"But don't worry so much about your girlfriend, boy."
"I'm not his girlfriend," Karyn pointed out.
"Whatever. It seems to me that she can't alter our deal, since the stone is now within your body. Nifty trick, eh?"
"You did that?" Jon asked.
"Yes, I did. I just wanted to make sure that you kept with the deal. Humans can be so untrustworthy."
"And you aren't?" Jon asked.
The guy laughed. "Of course I am. I'm the Devil. I just don't like it when others are as untrustworthy as me." He paused for a moment, becoming more serious. "Now, since your lady friend here can't change our deal, I guess I don't have to do anything to her. She's free to go." He turned and looked at her. "Go!"
Karyn got up quick and ran down the hall.
"Now we get to have some alone time, boy."
