Jane stared at her reflection. How could this have happened? She opened her hand and looked down at the jewel she was holding, the one she found in her daughter's room.
"Hey," Athena said. "That's Zoe's talisman. How did you get it?"
"Talisman?" Jane asked.
"Yeah, it's what I was talking about. It grants wishes and ..." She paused for a second. "Jane, you didn't use it, did you?"
Jane thought back and realized that she had used it, when she was looking at the spell book. She wished to understand the book and the talisman turned her into a witch, because only a witch would understand it.
"I think I did. The talisman turned me into a witch."
"That's impossible. You've been a witch for years."
Years? Jane thought.
"I probably wouldn't be a witch myself if it weren't for you," Athena said, although that wasn't true.
Jane collapsed on the living room sofa. What had happened to her life? With one harmless wish she had turned her life upside down. She didn't even know herself in this reality.
"I can't do this," Jane said, looking up at Athena. "I can't be a witch. I mean, just look at me. I can't go around dressed like this. People will think that I'm crazy."
"Well, actually, people already think that. That's probably why they call you Crazy Jane."
"Crazy Jane?"
"I didn't think up the name. And you know, you're not crazy, obviously. It's just that they don't understand your lifestyle, that's all."
"What about my friends? Linda from across the street and Megan from down the road?"
"Jane, the only friends you've got are me and the rest of the coven."
She dropped her head again, thinking how Linda and Megan thought of her now. Did they think that she was crazy, just like the rest of the neighborhood did?
"Oh, I wish Linda and Megan were still my friends."
"Jane, the talisman!"
They both looked away, as the talisman began to glow.
