In the end Jonnie didn't have to decide, since Sarah had been hanging around the school and had just been leaving at around the same time.
"Nice to see you, Jonnie," she said. "How did meeting the geeks go?"
"Er-- I didn't do well at the video games and I nearly got asked out."
"I expected that," replied Sarah. "I don't see why you even bothered..."
"Well, my Mom's a scientist."
"I don't see the connection. My dad's a doctor and you don't see me hanging around the biology lab. Anyway, we're going to the mall. Would you like to come?"
Jonnie had no idea what Sarah and her groupies would do at the mall. "What's this about? How often do you go?"
Sarah gave her a funny face back. "You're weird. We're going to buy things. We go there when we need to buy things. Though it's mostly Nicole who needs to buy things. We're here to give advice."
"I could use some advice myself," replied Jonnie.
"I can see that," said Sarah. "Your fashion sense looks like what it would be for someone who's Mom is a scientist."
I'm a guy in a girl's body, thought Jonnie. I don't know that stuff... no, I'm not programmed for that stuff. Shopping for female clothes wasn't something she'd ever done as Jon, and the idea of doing so made her as uneasy as it would as Jon--it wasn't something she particularly liked to do or wanted to do. But was it something she had to do?
