"He's dead. He's not coming back." Karyn's voice whimpered.
"You can't mean..."
"The stone's gone, so there's nothing that can be done."
Zoe stood up and started pacing. What had happened to the stone, she wondered.
The way the supernatural worked was really mysterious.
If the thing that changed was that Jon wasn't alive, shouldn't it have gone to her, as the next grandchild? Karyn was technically a grandchild too now, she supposed, but Zoe had a relationship with her grandfather.
She thought about where she would've hidden something like that, then looked towards her desk, which was right next to where Karyn was sitting. She opened the middle drawer on the right side, and in it there was a wooden box that she had not seen before. There were some unusual markings on it.
She took off the box's lid. There was a reddish stone inside.
"This is what you're looking for, right?" she said, holding the stone up.
Karyn looked up. "How?!"
"Since Jon didn't get it, I did, obviously. He wasn't the only descendent of our grandfather."
Karyn let out huge sigh of relief. "Let's get Jon back!" she shouted.
She stood up suddenly and made a grab for the stone from Zoe's hand.
