Finally Zoe decided to explain. "I was trying to be nice to Jon so he's not late, but... you're not Jon! Where did Jon go? You're wearing Jon's clothes but you look like me...."
"Oh, come on," said the girl. "I'm your sister Jamie. Your twin."
"But I don't have a..."
Jamie's face contorted into a suspiciously guilty look. "Well, you do now," she said. "You didn't happen to, well, hear anything the other night?"
"I was listening to Jon and Karyn but I couldn't really hear all the words. Now who the fuck are you anyway?"
"I'm Jamie," she replied. "But until the other night I was Jon. I think what happens is you heard the wish, even if you couldn't make out all the words, and that counts."
"It's impossible!" said Zoe. "You can't be Jon, and you certainly can't be a sister I don't have."
"Believe me," said Jamie. "Grandpa willed me something that gives me certain magic powers. I wished I'd know what it's like to be a twin, for the next week. I figured it would split me in two or something, instead it turned me into your twin. If it's any consolation, I didn't deliberately say anything about it being you, it just turned out that way."
"If you're really Jon and you have magic powers, make me a ham sandwich."
Jamie reached into her pocket and said "I wish Zoe is holding a ham sandwich. And by the way, I wouldn't advise joking like that with people with magic powers."
Zoe felt her hand change position. Suddenly she was holding something. She lifted and of course it was a ham sandwich. Two slices of bread, ham, cheese, and mustard that she definitely wasn't holding a moment ago. "I... um, figured if you were going to turn me into one you'd do it without me having to ask you first." She pushed the door farther open and tossed it into Jon's trashcan.
"Zoe, I'm your br-- sister! I'm not going to turn you into lunch. But we're both stuck this way."
"Then I'm telling Mom."
"No you're not," said Jamie. "Only us and Karyn know that I wasn't always your sister. She'd just call you nuts. But now that you're here, we need to work with each other."
"I need to work with you? You, my brother with boobs and magic powers? With what, dress sense? You look like Jon. Or at least your clothes do."
"Maybe, but right now that's not it. You see, Zoe... since you heard the wish, you have three choices. First of all, you can go to school with everyone else wondering why you forgot your own sister. Second, I could wish you remember me. And third, you and I could go through our stuff and learn something about our life so that we can at least pretend to remember being Jamie and Zoe the twins. What do you pick?"
