It was almost time for the first class of the day, around her students hustled to avoid tardiness. Out of the corner of her eye, Catherine saw a familiar face. A girl with long blonde hair, jeans, and a gray baggy sweatshirt that failed to conceal her large breasts.
“Hey, Karyn. Gary got this cool card that can…” Catherine trailed off. Karyn looked almost sad, pitying. “What?”
“Cat," Karyn said, sighing, "I thought you understood. We used to be friends but now that you are hanging out with that bitch we’re over. I don’t want to be mean but those were my terms.”
“You mean Sarah?”
“Of course I mean Sarah. Now move. Please. I need to get to class.”
Catherine was shocked. Now that reality had changed and she was part of the cheerleaders, Karyn and her had a falling out sometime in the past. Cat was about to say something. She wasn’t sure what when someone bumped into her back.
It was Steve Farber. “Sorry Cat. I didn’t see you there…” Steve trailed off glancing between Karyn and Catherine with a calculating look. Evaluating years of history that Cat, unfortunately, didn’t know.
“Are you making up with your ‘girlfriend’?” It was clear from the way he said it and the way he was smirking that this was a joke. He knew about the newly manufactured past between the two girls and wanted to poke fun at Catherine and maybe piss Karyn off. But there was maybe a little of something more. Like he maybe was looking out for a friend or acquaintance.
Or maybe because he had an obligation to look out for the cheerleaders with Sarah as his girlfriend. Or maybe it was genuine care. Catherine couldn’t tell. He looked into Cat’s eyes, silently asking. Do you need help? It was at this moment when Karyn opened her mouth for an angry retort.
“Look. Cat and I aren’t friends. And I’m definitely not her gir-” Karyn stopped suddenly as if someone had grabbed her tongue. A moment of bewilderment passed quickly on both Karyn and Steve’s faces.
Karyn blinked as if pulling herself back into the present. “Maybe we are patching things up after a fight. Maybe we aren’t. However, that’s none of your business Steve. Even if my girlfriend is part of your girlfriend’s cheerleading team doesn’t mean you get to stick your nose in our relationship.” Karyn huffed.
Steve quickly started walking backwards, both hands raised in mock surrender. “Sorry.” He finally said before glancing back at Catherine. “See you at the party?”
“Sure,” Catherine replied blankly, still in shock.
“Sorry about getting heated. Now that I know him better, Steve isn’t that bad. Sarah isn’t either. That doesn’t mean I’ll be friends with them.” Karyn leaned down and kissed Catherine on the lips, lingering there, savoring before leaning back.
“Sorry, got to go talk to a teacher real quick. I’ll see you in class?”
“Of course.”
“Love you. We'll talk about the party later.” Karyn spun around and disappeared into the swarm of high school students. Leaving Catherine to stand there shocked standing stationary in the eye of the storm.
Finally, her brain came back online enough for her to piece together what had just happened and reach into her jeans to pull out the I.D. card.
“Fuck,” she whispered to no one at all, “other people can change things too.”
Catherine stood there staring down at the seemingly innocuous I.D card until the bell tolled.
