By the time lunch came around, Sarah and her friends were practically fed up. Everyone ignored them and the few that didn't treated them like trash. Certainly Zoe and her friends had it easy. At least they were treated like people.
But, of course, Zoe and her friends saw it differently. And by the time lunch period came around for them, they were practically fed up. They couldn't take the constant attention. It got to the point where people just wouldn't leave them alone. If Zoe heard one more person ask advice about fashion or music or celebrities, she was gonna kill herself. Truly, Sarah and her friends had it easy.
When Zoe and her friends got in the lunch line, she was shocked that everyone let them skip ahead. Of course, maybe she shouldn't have been shocked since that's how people were treating them for the first half of the school day. People constantly went out of their way to please Zoe and her friends, probably thinking that it would earn them "friendship points". Won't they be surprised.
And when Sarah and her friends got in the lunch line, they ended up being in the back, even though they didn't start out that way. People kept on cutting in front of them, like they weren't even there. Sarah protested a few times, but all she got were annoyed looks and an occasional "Shut up, freak."
And by the time they got their food, half their lunch period was already over.
They walked to their usual table, but saw that Zoe and her friends were already sitting there, along with Allison and Erika, the remaining two cheerleaders, who (lucky for them) didn't get their lives messed up. Also at the table were a bunch of jocks, including Biff Meadows, captain of the football team. Sarah didn't notice, but Zoe and her friends were very uncomfortable. Sarah was too jealous to notice. I should be eating with them, not that Goth girl, she thought. Then she corrected herself. Former Goth girl.
"Hey, that Goth kid. What's his name? Trevor?" Melissa said. "He's waving at us."
Sarah looked over at a table at the very back of the room. It looked darker than the rest of the room, thanks to the burned out fluorescent light over the table, and flickering light just next to it. Don't they ever keep things working around here?
Sarah reluctantly walked towards Trevor's table. From how she was treated that morning, she was sure that no one else would allow her to eat with them, but she still didn't want to associate with that freak boy.
They sat down and ate in silence. Trevor obviously saw that something was wrong, but kept quiet about it and let them eat their lunch. He'd have plenty of time later to ask them what was up.
Just as Tiffany was finishing her main course, the bell rang. "I didn't even start my dessert," she complained. The other girls looked at her. They looked worn out, depressed. They wanted this day over now.
But there was still another three hours to go.
