Jon knew where he wanted to go. There was one person, more than any other, who Jon wanted to travel back in time to see. His grandpa had died so suddenly, and so mysteriously... and Jon missed him more than he'd ever thought he could miss someone. He HAD to know what had happened to his grandfather.
"Karyn..." Jon said. "I want to find grandpa."
"Oh, Jon," Karyn said, her voice softening. She placed a hand on Jon's shoulder. "Of course. Let's go."
"PLEASE INPUT" the machine squacked impatiently, rattling Jon to his toes.
Jon sighed. He knew exactly where, and when, his trail would have to begin. "Machine," he said, "take us to Tierra de la Piedra, Chile, two months ago." Jon had gotten a letter from his grandpa from Tierra de la Piedra two months ago, as well as a packet of photographs. It was the last time he had heard from his grandpa before the package with the stone had arrived. It was the last place he could be absolutely certain his grandpa had been, and so it was where their search would have to begin.
"INPUT ACCEPTED," the machine said. "PLEASE ENTER THE CHAMBER."
Jon entered the machine, and Karyn, her hand still on his shoulder, followed after him. A moment later, they were snatched from the present into the past, and onto the first leg of what would prove to be a very long journey indeed.
