"We can travel to any time?" Karyn asked.
"Yep," Jon said. "From the beginning of human history all the way up to... well, now, I guess"
"I want to go back to the eighties," Karyn said. "To our high school. I want to see our parents when they were our age."
Jon smiled. While he had taken his inspiration for their method of time travel from Quantum Leap, he knew Karyn had been inspired by another eighties classic about a time machine. For as long as he could remember, Karyn's favorite movie had been Back to the Future... she had even once confessed to him that her first crush had been on Michael J Fox, or rather, on Marty McFly. And Jon had to admit, the thought of seeing his parents in high school was kind of intriguing... maybe he could see whether his parents were really the saints they claimed they had been, or whether, like Marty's mom, his own mother had been a closet nymphomaniac. And Jon's and Karyn's parents had gone to school together, at the same school Jon and Karyn attended; Karyn's parents and Jon's hadn't been friends or anything, but they had been in some classes together.
"Machine," Jon said, "take us to Middleton High School in... um..." he did some quick calculations "...April, 1986."
INPUT ACCEPTED," the machine responded. "PLEASE ENTER THE CHAMBER."
Jon and Karyn locked hands and stepped inside, and a moment later they vanished in a flood of light.
When the light subsided, Jon found himself standing in the middle of a high school hallway, surrounded on all sides by students rushing to class. Jon recognized the hallway immediately; this was high school, and it had apparently changed little in the last twenty years. The students, however, looked like they'd just stepped out of a Brat Pack movie. Big hair and mullets and valley girl fashion abounded. Jon realized with a thrill that the machine had worked; he had no doubt that he had indeed travelled into the past.
So. Jon knew where and when he was. That still left one burning question, though: who had he become?
