There was a rumble in the distance. Nothing seemed to happen, at least not right then and there.
"See?" said Karyn. "Nobody hurt."
"I think it's a little cooler," replied Jon.
"Of course it's a little cooler, but that isn't going to hurt us. It's the trend that matters... it won't be more than a degree or two different right now."
"But something's still bugging me," said Jon. He walked over to the TV... pausing for a moment when he glanced outside the window and saw clouds on the horizon. "That's strange. And that sound, it's getting worse."
"I know what you're going to say," said Karyn. "You're going to say that I wished up that sound by accident. It's probably just a storm or something. Why don't you just let it be? Let's do something different. We can wish up some nice things for us... surely you at least want some music or something."
"Yeah, I suppose."
They started making wishes for trivial things and Jon had come up with a refrigerator in his room, some CDs, clothes, and eventually a car... when there was a loud crash as something big and heavy crashed into the side of the house.
Jon looked outside and everything was blowing around. Trees were swaying and a baby carriage passed by, flying into a car... fortunately both were unoccupied, but Jon began to get a sinking feeling.
He grabbed the stone from Karyn and shouted "I wish I knew why things are like this!"
The stone, of course, had a limited range on its wishes. Karyn's careless wish had reduced global temperatures... within that area. And temperature differences like that drive hurricanes. It had taken a little while for the winds to get all the way to the center, and the newly forming hurricane didn't have an eye yet... but a hurricane it was, or would be very soon.
