"Master, you are too kind," Genie said, partly because her genie nature urged her to be servile to her masters, but also because it was true. There were few mortals who would forgo wishes and free the genie. "To be free again ..." Genie whispered and trailed off, thinking on it.
"Well, I never quite said that, dear. God has a plan for all of us, you know, and maybe it was part of His plan that you become what you have become."
"But, I ... Master, I desire more than anything to be free."
"I never said you wouldn't be free, either. I'm still making up my mind, dearie. Turn here," she said, pointing left toward the "Lamb of God" sign.
Genie nodded, but tried to keep her spirits high. "Of course, Master. I should not presume."
"Though, I was just thinking, I wish I could know how and why you were imprisoned. It wouldn't do any good to free you if you became a genie for a reason," Olivia said. Through her tone, it was clear she did not mean to make a wish. But she had done so nonetheless. And Genie felt her compulsion to obey overtake her, though it was not so strong as she normally felt. Perhaps because Olivia did not mean to wish, and that mattered. What it meant was another thing entirely. And somewhere deep down, Genie felt a fear, as if she would prefer her Master not know the truth. But why would that be?
