It was hard, so hard to think, and think fast enough to stop Claire. And besides, it wasn't like Genie had many options. Genies weren't known to have many options. She couldn't even use magic without a master making a wish.
And so she heard Claire make her fifth and final wish, and her compulsions overtook her. And all at once, everything came into Genie's mind. The past, the future, and present. She made the lamp to force someone to serve her, and was now stuck serving. She wanted infinite power, whenever she wanted it, and not when someone else allowed her. She wanted to live in a mansion, to not be trapped in a lamp. She wanted a partner to live out her life together, not be forever alone. In short, she wanted what Claire was about to get. It caused envy to bubble up in Genie's heart. Besides, what did she have to lose? Claire was only going to be her master for another five seconds.
And then Claire made her wish, binding Genie to its effects. "I wish my mom's cancer went into remission."
