It had worked. Nick had managed to change himself, in one way. It was a new way to use his ability, after so many years. He wasn't just doing the same thing over and over again, making him feel better about having and using the power.
But it was still limited. Nick now needed to know more in order for this change to be useful. Did he still live at the same place? What other things about his life were different?
Giving people direct commands using his power was hard. He couldn't order a store clerk to give him free food, for instance. But he could change the situation--"you already have some money that I paid you with", "you have a special today where the first customer in a red shirt gets free food", or just make the clerk absent minded enough to forget to ask for money.
So how could he find out more about Nikki's life? No, how could she. Nick had changed into a woman now, and had to remember that she was female until she changed back.
"Ryan," she said, not using her power yet, "tell me about myself. About both of us."
"Huh? Are you sure you're feeling okay?" Which is how most people would react. Nobody would ask someone to tell her about herself, after all.
Now Nikki used her power. In what situation would it make sense for Ryan to describe Nikki's life to Nikki? Maybe if she got amnesia, but that could cause other problems. She needed something different. "You were thinking of starting a blog under a fake name and you were going to write about both of us, so you were going to go through important things about us to prepare."
Any lingering trace of confusion in Ryan's attitude vanished and she began to explain.
