If there was anything David noticed first, it was the fact everything around him was running smooth. He was expecting anarchy and chaos in the streets. Instead, there was tranquility, even more peace than normal. Birds were chirping, kids ran down the sidewalks playing, and everyone greeted him with a chipper smile. In David's eyes, this was the perfect trap. Making everyone calm and relaxed would let Dr. Gilmore run amok without being caught. Then again, the townspeople could just be hypnotized into enjoying this. The town wasn't in complete order. Some outlandish changes were obviously made. Only David registered the not even subtle changes.
A few houses were swapped out with ones of different times and themes. A small castle replaced one house. It even had itself a moat out in front with a small bridge over it. From a high up open window, a young beautiful woman sat and brushed her hair, greeting every one that passed by in an old-timey English accent. She had a purple silk dress and matching ribbons in her beautiful blonde hair.
"Art thou the knight that has come to save thee!?" She bellowed to David.
"Um. Probably not." David said as he continued walking.
The next few buildings were normal until he spotted one that looked like a giant bounce house. It still was shaped like the other houses on the block, but was completely bright with colors. He saw the front door 'swing' open and a few people bounced right now. It was a family of four, but even they were changed! When they bounced out of their house and landed on the concrete they still bounced up and down. It was not only a bounce house, but it was inhabited by bouncy people. David watched in awe as they hopped high into the air and all crossed the street in a huge arc.
David could still here the noise from his earpiece and knew he had to get somewhere with better reception. If he got caught in a bad situation he at least wanted someone to know. Things could get very hairy soon seeing that there really weren't any limits to the imagination of the town's oppressor. The last thing he saw on the block made his stomach churn a little. One house looked like a massive cardboard cutout. It was hyper-realistic, but completely flat. He realized it was an actual house, with all its third dimension taken away. Lights flickered from the windows and he could even spot people inside. It was like an actual house on the inside, just impossibly compressed. Worst of all, someone managed to open the door and leave, but only because she was as incredibly flat as well. A business woman slipped through the slit of the front door and walked right out. She too was paper thin, somehow managing not to topple over on her heels. David saw her curvy figure flattened into a business attire that looked like paper as well. Her 2-d head turned at the neck spotting David and she rose her hand to say hello. Not wanting to be rude David waved back. He felt entirely guilty just watching her struggle to fight the light breeze pushing her around.
David had to make it to a main street. He couldn't do this alone and was hoping at the very least he could find someone who still had power in this city. Why he decided to wear heels today, he'd never know. The clicks of his shoes sped up and he grabbed his arms. It was almost nighttime and he didn't want to be out when that came.
