"Can I help you?" a man asked, walking towards Laura, after she entered the store.
"Yes. I want to buy some new shoes," she said.
He smiled. "Then you came to the right place." He looked her up and down, then took a look at the shoes she already had on. "Come with me," he said.
She followed him to an aisle filled with low-heel shoes. "No," she said, stopping him. "Actually, I was thinking about wearing something with a higher heel."
"Oh?"
"Is that surprising?" she asked.
"No, no. Not at all. The customer's always right." He paused, thinking, then headed down the aisle. "Follow me."
She followed him to an aisle filled with high-heel shoes. She had never worn anything with a heel higher than two inches, but she felt like she was in an experimental mood. She didn't have to go overboard. A three-inch heel would be sufficient.
"What size are you looking for?" the salesman asked.
She told him what she wanted and he led her to a shelf full of 3-inch heels. But then she frowned.
"Something wrong?" he asked.
"I was hoping for something a little more ... colorful. These look too plain."
He raised an eyebrow.
"What?" she asked.
"Sorry. I just didn't think ... I mean, the way you're dressed ..." He cleared his throat. "Come with me." He walked down the aisle and Laura followed. And in no time, they found themselves in an aisle filled with more 3-inch heels, except that these were in vibrant colors. Green, blue, red, pink, etc. And the heels generally looked sleeker than the ones she was shown before. She picked up a pair of red heels and smiled. "I like these."
"Well, let's see how they fit you," the salesman said.
Laura walked over to a bench and sat down, then she removed her right foot from her current shoe and slipped it into the new 3-inch-heeled one. There was a noticeable difference in how it felt, but it wasn't really too different than what she already had. She tried on the left shoe and walked around in them, getting a feel for it. And when she was satisfied by how good they felt on her feet, she decided to buy them ... and also two more pairs (one pair was black, the other was dark blue).
"Is it okay if I just wear them out the store?" she asked the salesman at the checkout counter, after paying.
"Sure, go ahead."
She smiled, then slipped on the red pair. As she left the store, the man called out to her. "Come back anytime."
