After Laura Ferguson got dressed in her usual clothing ... a frumpy high-necked, long-sleeved white blouse (which wasn't very flattering, even with her D-cup breasts) with a small crucifix necklace placed around her neck, a beige ankle-length skirt, and a pair of two-inch heels ... she walked out of her bedroom and down the hall towards the kitchen. Her teenage daughter Nadine would be heading to school soon. And Laura would be heading out shortly after that to her church to help the pastor's wife with something. She did a lot of things for her church. Some people would say she did too much. But she could never do too much for her Lord. People also would say that she was far too prudish ... and they'd be right. Laura believed that people, especially women, shouldn't display themselves as popular culture tells them to. It disgusted her how parents allowed their sons and daughters to dress these days. At least she raised her daughter to be proper.
"Bye, Mom," Nadine said, walking out. "I won't be coming home right after school today. I've got a study session with Tina and Paul." Tina Shepard and Paul Anderson were Nadine's best friends ... and like Nadine and Laura, they were devout Baptists. A beacon of light in the sinful realm of public high school.
"Have a good day, honey," Laura said.
And then Nadine was gone, off to school.
Before Laura decided to leave, she had a quick breakfast, then straightened up the place a little. Then she headed back to her bedroom to get her purse. But before she could make it to the end of the hall, she heard the doorbell ring. I wonder who that could be, she thought, as she turned around and walked back towards the front of the house.
The doorbell rang again. Whoever it was must have been impatient. Maybe it was Nadine. Maybe she forgot her house key and ...
Once again, the doorbell rang.
"I'm coming!" she yelled, then she unlocked and opened the door.
