Saronda's morning was like any other. Well, it would have been like any other if she'd always been a black girl in a single-parent household.
But, at least in her head, she hadn't been.
So figuring out the new hair products, trying on new makeup, and showering were all...different. Especially showering. So much chocolate brown skin in one look. And it was hers. And it was...jarring.
Finally, when she was done, her mom pointed out the door. "Oh look, da bus is comin' a little early today. Better hurry!" Realizing this was how she got to school now, she bolted after the bus and climbed in, taking a seat in the back by the window.
As the bus continued, she realized the extent of the new world in which that cursed green stone had dropped her. Buildings looked less well maintained, and several had security bars or even boarded-up windows. The road was rougher. A few buildings were outright missing. Perhaps they'd burned down?
Saronda McMillan realized that she now lived in a very different reality. Lake Point might as well have become Black Point.
At that moment, halfway through, someone approached Saronda and asked to talk to her...
