Sarah walked over next to Morris and felt him touch her neck. His fingers felt cold and slick.
"What was that?" Sarah asked, startled.
"That's what I invented. It's a new kind of tracker. You see, there are nanites inside the goo ..."
"Nanites? You mean those tiny robot things?" Sarah asked.
"That's right. The nanites are absorbed into your skin and then they emit a specific signal which I can track using this," he said, lifting up a small gadget. "If you're ever kidnapped or taken hostage, then we'll know exactly where you are. Neat, huh?"
"Yeah," she said hesitantly, rubbing the area of her neck that Morris touched. "But I wish you would have told me before putting the nanites in me. Just a small warning."
"Oh, sorry. I guess I was just too excited."
"So, you came up with this during my vacation? That was pretty fast."
"Oh, well, I can't take total credit for it. Agent Kendall and I tracked down someone while you were away. Norton Weisman is his name. He created these nanites to control people's minds. I just took them from him and reprogrammed them."
"Wait a minute. You investigated someone with Kendall?"
"Yeah. You weren't here and he didn't want to wait. But it's not like I haven't gone with him before. I was with him during that whole Lake Point incident, but that was before you joined the agency."
"Yeah, I know." She paused. "So, are these nanites safe? I mean, someone won't be able to use them to control my mind, will they?"
"Don't worry. I reprogrammed them the moment I got them back to my lab. They're harmless. All they do now is emit a tracking signal. That's all."
Sarah felt a little relieved. "Okay. I just wanted to make sure." She turned and started towards the door.
"Have fun on your case," Morris said.
"As much as I can," Sarah said, on her way out. "But you know how Kendall is."
