Agent Steven Kendall walked to his desk, a cup of coffee in hand. He sat down and sighed, then turned on his computer monitor. Instantly, the screen filled with data concerning potential cases. Somewhere, anywhere, out there, a crime was being committed. And maybe people didn't know it was a crime or maybe they didn't know anything was happening at all. But it was happening ... right now.

He took a sip of his coffee and accidentally dropped it. "Damn it!" he yelled, getting some of it on his hand, but most of it on the floor.

"I see you've been having a good vacation," a voice said.

Kendall looked up and saw his partner (of only a few months) Agent Sarah Smith.

"I didn't take a vacation. And you shouldn't have either. You've only been on the job for three months."

"Yeah, but those were three long months. And besides, the vacation is mandatory."

"Not for me. You can't just take a break from the investigations. They're too important. Remember your second week here?"

"How could I forget? I had nightmares about that for another week and a half."

"Exactly," Kendall said. "What if that guy was able to do that in some other town or some other state ... or some other country? If we hadn't been there to stop him ..."

"Yeah, yeah. I know. We're the only defense against these people."

"It's not just a slogan. It's the truth. And it's something too important to take a vacation from."

"Well, I'm not on vacation now. So what do we have?" Sarah asked.

Kendall grunted, then stood up, still wiping the coffee off his hand and wrist. "Let me show you." He walked out of his office and onto the main floor. A couple of men and women were busy answering phones and doing paperwork. The two agents walked past them and approached a large flat panel monitor mounted on the wall. Kendall activated the screen and statistics filled it. These statistics determined whether or not someone was using abnormal abilities to commit crimes, whether using science or magic.

"Is that what I think it is?" Sarah asked, pointing towards the most prominent set of statistics.

"It is." He sat down on the edge of a nearby desk. "I haven't seen anything like that since ... well, since way before you came on board. This is definitely not a small crime."

"So where do we start?" Sarah asked.

"Well first, you need to get updated with Bertman. He's waiting in his lab. He's got some new tech to show you." Dr. Morris Bertman was the leading science specialist in the agency. He may not look like much, but he was twice as smart as most people Kendall knew. He was just glad that Bertman was on his team.

Sarah turned back and looked at the data concerning their new case. From what she could see, it seemed that they would be tracking down ...
