Kevin was about to grab a cracker himself, but the woman pulled the tray away from him at the last second. She was probably upset at him because of his outburst. But given the circumstances, Kevin thought his impatience was justified. They only came here for directions, not rest and relaxation. And it still felt to Kevin like this woman was trying to keep them there. But why?
"I can't tell you how glad I am to have you here with us. It's been so long since we've had company," the woman said, as she sat in a chair opposite of them.
"Excuse me, we?" Kevin asked.
"Oh, yes. I share the house with my daughters," the woman said. Her eyes got wider, as did her smile. "Would you like to meet them?"
"Uh ..." Kevin said.
The woman stood up and yelled "Girls! Come on down here and show yourselves to our guests!" Then she looked at Kevin. "They'll be down soon enough."
Kevin heard creaking noises coming from the upstairs. And then footfalls on the stairs behind him.
