"Face it, we're lost," Julie said.
"We're not lost," Kevin said. "I've got the map right here."
"But this place isn't on the map."
"That's because it's a shortcut."
"Shortcuts don't take this long, Kevin." She looked around. "Maybe we should ask for directions."
"Who are ya gonna ask? A squirrel? There's no one out here."
"That's why we're lost," Julie said.
Kevin grunted, then looked back at the map.
"Wait a minute," Julie said.
"What?"
"I think I see ..." She walked up the path a bit. "Yeah. It's a house."
"A house?" Kevin put the map away. "All the way out here?"
"Maybe we're closer to civilization than we thought," Julie said, quickening her pace. Kevin had to quicken his own as well, to keep up with her.
When they got closer, they saw that it was an old cottage. But it was run down, like it hadn't been used for years.
"It's abandoned," Kevin said.
"No, wait," Julie said. She turned her ear towards the house. "I thought I heard something. I'm gonna go check it out." She walked towards the porch.
"Julie, wait. I have a bad feeling about this."
"Would you rather wander the forest for another two hours?"
"It's called hiking, not wandering."
"It felt like wandering to me," Julie said.
"Are we gonna argue about this again?"
Suddenly, there was a metallic whine.
"Tell me you heard that," Julie said. She turned back towards the house and walked up to the front door. She paused for a moment, then knocked. When no one answered, she knocked again, this time louder.
"There's no one home, Julie."
She looked like she was about to step down from the porch, but then she turned back towards the door and tried to turn the doorknob.
"What are you doing?" Kevin asked.
"Maybe they didn't hear me," she said, as the knob easily moved. The door opened with a creak.
Kevin walked up onto the porch and grabbed Julie's arm. "This is a bad idea."
Julie shrugged him off. "Hello?" she asked into the house. "Is anyone here? We're lost and we need directions!" But no one responded.
"See? There's no one here. Now let's get out of here," Kevin said.
"Just wait a sec," Julie said. She walked into the house and Kevin reluctantly followed.
