The next time I opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital room, in bed. A nurse walked in (a very attractive one at that) and smiled at me. And I smiled at her, but probably not for reason she thought.
"You're awake," she said. "Are you feeling any better, Ms. Robinson?"
I wasn't sure if I heard her correctly. "Did you say Miss?"
"You're not married, right?" she asked.
"No, I'm not."
"Then I got it right: Ms. Robinson."
Suddenly, I remembered everything that happened after I woke up in that dark room. When those two doctors told me that they put my brain into some woman's body. I looked down at myself and saw that I still definitely had the woman's body. Even under my hospital gown, the woman's breasts still looked quite large.
"Where are the doctors who performed the brain surgery?" I asked the nurse.
She looked confused. "Ms. Robinson, no one performed brain surgery on you or any kind of surgery on you, for that matter."
"But ..." I began to say, as I reached up to my head. I stopped when I realized that I had hair. Not a lot, but my head was definitely not shaved.
I sat up a little and looked directly at the nurse. "Where are the brain surgeons?"
"Ms. Robinson, I have no idea what you're talking about."
I thought for a moment, then said "Why am I here, then, if I didn't have surgery?"
"You were brought here for observation. That was two days ago."
"Who brought me in?"
"Uh, let me see. I can't remember their names. But one was a young brown-haired man and the other was an older gray-haired man."
"That's them!" I said, excitedly. Maybe a little too much, because the nurse jumped when I said it. "Uh ... where are they now?"
"Ms. Robinson, they just dropped you off and left."
"But they were doctors, right?"
"Oh yes. I remember that. They had all the right credentials."
"Credentials?" I asked.
"Government men, that sort of thing. But they were definitely doctors."
"How long do I have to stay here?"
"Actually, since you're awake, you can leave right now." The nurse walked to the closet and opened it. "Here are your clothes."
"I was wearing them when I came here?"
"Yep," she said. "Oh, and here's your purse." She grabbed it out of the closet and brought it to me. Then she left the room to give me some privacy.
I looked through the purse and found an ID card. It had a picture of an attractive woman on it. Was that the new me? Next to the picture was the name ERICA ROBINSON, and the gender was listed as FEMALE, as if anyone couldn't figure it out from the picture.
I sighed and wondered what had happened. Why would those two doctors just dump me at a hospital somewhere? I had a feeling that more was going on than met the eye.
