"Is that really a desert out there?" asked Melissa.
"Yeah," Dawn said. "I don't know how it's possible. But yeah, it is."
All of the customers, by this time, were looking out of the windows. Ted was still getting stoned in the restroom, not even aware that anything had changed. But Sydney was already outside, so she definitely noticed that something was different.
Dropping her diary, she walked out from under the back porch used for deliveries. She looked up into the blazing sun (she hated the sun), then at the never-ending sand, which stretched to the horizon.
Suddenly, she heard a noise, and when she squinted, she saw something approaching, in the distance.
