There, that was the last bite. Done with lunch, so it's back to work. I waved my hand to the waitress (Lyndsay was her name) and got my bill. I looked around at everyone before standing up. It wasn't quite as busy in the café as it usually was. I guessed that it was a slow day. And in retrospect, that was probably a good thing. The other waitress (Dawn was her name) walked by with a tray of food, intended for the couple (their names were Brandon and Donna) near the front of the room. Judging from their conversation over the last ten minutes, they had only been married for a few years and they wanted children, but weren't sure if they were ready. I felt sorry for them. At the table next to me sat two middle-aged women (named Abigail and Grace). I had seen them eating there before. They were stout church-goers with a high sense of morality. Behind the counter was the owner of the restaurant. His name was Jerry, a 50-year old, slightly overweight man. Sitting in one of the back tables were two teenagers (Bobby and Melissa). The boy was a star athlete at the high school and the girl was a cheerleader. It was like a match made in heaven. The people who I didn't see included Ted, the guy that cleans the restaurant, and a Goth girl named Sydney. Ted was currently in the men's bathroom getting stoned. And Sydney was out behind the building. There was a secluded spot, just outside the delivery entrance for the café, that she liked to sit in and smoke, and maybe write stuff in her diary.

I walked to the cashier and payed my bill, not realizing what would happen just minutes after I left. Not even realizing what fate all these people had.
