They slowly crept towards their destination, making sure the guards didn't spot them. And it was all going well, until Charlie accidentally walked into one of the crates, knocking it over. "Damn it," he whispered. He looked at Amy and then at Matt. "Do you think they ..." He never got to finish his sentence.
The energy pulses were extremely loud, as they ripped through the alien air. All three of them ducked for cover, watching the guards run in their direction.
When one of the guards got close enough, Matt tripped him and grabbed his weapon. The gun glowed red and Matt used it to vaporize the guard. It happened so fast and with such intensity that Charlie wasn't sure how to react.
"Matt!" Amy yelled out.
Her boyfriend jumped up and shot the other guard point-blank. In an instant, he was gone, vaporized just like the other guard.
Charlie stopped to catch his breath, then got to his feet. "Did you have to kill them?"
"Charlie, it's just a game. Remember?"
Charlie closed his eyes and then opened them, clearing his mind. "Right."
They moved towards their destination, now with no obstacles in their way.
"Why did that gun glow when you touched it?" Charlie asked.
"That means it's mine now. Watch," he said. He activated something on his "watch" and the gun disappeared in a burst of red light. He activated his "watch" again and suddenly, the gun was back. "I can store it and then bring it back whenever I want it. It's a video game."
"Okay," Charlie said. It was all so realistic, it was hard to keep in mind that it wasn't really real.
