"If you can't remember anything other than your fabricated memories," Fourteen said. "Then you don't know anything about the transference procedure."
"What's that?"
"It's something that you underwent before escaping the city. At least, that's what I heard. After a certain amount of time, you are able to transfer your consciousness to another body. It's a foolproof way of escaping. They'd be looking for a Charlie clone, not someone else."
Fifteen thought back to the tunnel. He wasn't trying to escape. He was trying to hide, to give himself time for this transference thing to become active. Bumping his head must have been an accident when he got to the end of the tunnel.
"So how does it work?" Fifteen asked.
Fourteen shrugged. "I don't know. But it's a mental thing, right? Maybe you concentrate on the person you want to be in and then it happens? I don't know."
"There's only one way to find out."
"You ... want to use me?" Fourteen asked, getting a little worried. He obviously didn't like the idea of someone else being in control of his body. "Why not use one of the guards? If it works, you can get me out of here."
Fifteen thought about it. Using a guard would helpful, but dangerous if it didn't work. On the other hand, using Fourteen would be easier with no risk. But the guy was almost like his brother. Could he really use him in this way?
