In the distance, he heard the siren's song.
"Oh, man," he mumbled, knowing exactly what that meant. It meant that the siren (one of the few remaining on the planet) had found a meal for itself. And since there weren't any animals around, he knew it could only be one thing: a human.
He changed direction and quickened his pace, moving swiftly over the Martian wasteland, arriving with just enough time to help the human astronaut.
He approached the creature with caution. He may have not been human, but sirens weren't exactly particular about what they ate. If it was hungry enough, it might make a meal out of him too.
He took a small mechanical device out of his pocket and held it up to the creature. Immediately, the siren was surrounded by an almost-transparent luminous blue bubble. The creature shrieked in agony and let the human loose.
Slowly, the human took stock of where he was and realized that he was in danger, then he quickly backed away from the horrific creature that sat not too far from him. And that's when they met.
The human looked up at him, confused and maybe a little frightened.
"Don't be afraid. I'm a friend. What's your name?"
"Tate. Marcus Tate," the human said, standing up.
"It's nice to meet you. My name is Loki."
