"I'm afraid you're pregnant."
"But I'm a guy, doctor," exclaimed Jim. "How can I be pregnant?"
"We've always known this was a possibility, Jim," said Dr. Marsh. "You do have a fully functional uterus in addition to your penis and self-fertilization is possible in these situations. You just won't be able to give birth normally. You will have to have a C-section."
"I'm going to have to explain this to my family," said Jim.
"I understand," said Dr. Marsh. "If you want, you can bring them down to see the results. It may help them adjust to it."
"Thank you, Dr.," said Jim. "I'll be down as soon as I can." Jim made an appointment and hung up the phone.
Pregnant, he thought. I'm going to be a mother. While he was both of the baby's 'parents,' due to his unique physiology, he coudln't bring himself to think of himself as the baby's father. Not when he was going to spend nine months carrying the baby inside of him.
Jim had been born with a rare medical condition, he had a fully functional uterus in addition to his male genitals. According to Dr. Marsh, his genitals were partially integrated, which made self-fertilization possible. While the condition was rare, it had been known to run in families. Jim's father and two of his uncles had uteruses. All three had given birth to at least one child. Jim's dad had given birth to Jim's older brother (who did not inherit a uterus). One of his uncles was currently pregnant and the other had been the primary birthparent of the family, giving birth to seven children to his wife's three. And now Jim was continuing the family tradition.
Jim knew that his family would support him, but the thought of being an unwed 'mother' intimidated him. All of the male 'mothers' in his family had been fortunate enough to impregnate themselves after they got married, but Jim didn't even have a girlfriend yet. He hadn't been sure that a girl would like a man who could get himself pregnant. Jim got up and went down to talk to his parents.
