Jim consulted his notes once again, and took a deep breath before reciting the spell, leaving out Rebecca's name at the last moment; who knew what modern names might translate to in Latin?
A strange sensation filled the air. The best way Jim could think of to describe it was that the universe shifted ever so slightly to the left. As quickly as it came, it passed, and Jim was left staring at himself, along with Rick, both of them trying to figure out why it hadn't worked. But when he moved, he felt a distinct lack of something. Jim pulled down his pants and underpants, and confirmed his suspicions: He had a vagina. Satisfied with this, he pulled his pants back up.
"What the fuck? What the fuck?!" Rick almost shouted. Jim grinned at his friend's - brother's, now, he reminded himself - response. He was the one with the pussy.
"I guess the magic is just lazy," Jim said, in a rather different voice, though one still very familiar. The voice he'd have if his voice had never cracked and deepened during puberty. "It made me your sister but just made the essential changes. I'm a flat-chested girl with a boyish face and figure," he explained, and held up his hand as if to halt Rick, though he wasn't talking. He'd once heard... no, she'd once heard, that a girl's ring finger was shorter than her index finger, but a boy's wasn't. That seemed to be true here. Her ring finger was shorter.
"Dude, is there something you're not telling me? You lose your parts and you don't even look fazed at all," Rick said, peering at his new sister with a bewildered expression.
"I guess when I felt like the universe moved, it was getting me used to everything. I even remember growing up as your sister. I'm sixteen now, by the way. And you're a dick," she added as an afterthought, scowling inside at her memories she knew to be false, though they felt so real. "You didn't feel it too? Maybe the spell didn't work quite right," Jim - Jamie - mused. She knew she must look like a blank idiot to her new brother, sorting through memories as she was, painful ones as she was teased relentlessly for looking so much like a boy; the other kids had had to take it on faith that she was female, and so very few did. A smile crossed her face as she rather distantly recalled her parents, and even her brother in his nicer moments, calling her pretty, and every synonym for it under the sun, as she cried. She remembered her mostly failed experiments with her hair and makeup, and even the day she decided to just cut her hair and go as a boy.
"You okay, dude?" Rick asked, snapping her out of her recollections. "You look like you do when you're working on a big science project for class."
"Yeah, I'm fine. My name is Jamie, by the way. Everyone's teased me all my life because I look like a boy. Even you. Especially you, and I think I deserve an apology," she stated, crossing her arms and adopting a pose she distantly recognized as feminine. Jamie didn't care. She did want an apology. Just because he couldn't remember it didn't mean she wasn't still hurt.
Rick looked at his transformed friend with a mixture of confusion and a shocking guilt he knew no reason he should feel. "A-alright," he mumbled, "I'm... sorry?" He looked at her with an expression he might have recognized as one he used with Rebecca once in a blue moon. As she smiled, he relaxed, and immediately tensed up again as the secret girl who was his sister and once his best friend pulled him into a tight, tender hug.
