Rick closed his eyes and murmured a barely audible chant, while making strange gestures with his hands. Jim rolled his eyes and paced about the room while his "magical" friend hammed it up.
I can't believe that I'm actually humoring him, thought Jim. But just as that thought passed through his mind, he felt a sudden sense of disorientation as the room smeared together like a running oil painting. Jim closed his eyes, trying to ignore the crazy feeling of falling, but he could still feel his body inexplicably move through space. A sudden jolt went through him as he felt his feet hit the ground. He opened his eyes to see that he was no longer in Rick's house, but behind the high school cafeteria. Jim quickly looked behind him to see that the sun was now setting, even though it was morning when he was in Rick's room a few seconds ago.
"What just happened?" asked Jim, with an impossibly puzzled expression plastered on his face.
"I used a translocation spell to teleport us to the high school, which you can plainly see. But to give it a little pizazz, I added a little Doc Brown to it by also reciting a time accelerator spell at the end of my chanting. What can I say, you wanted proof, so you got it."
"So we're in the future?"
"Yep. Two years in the future to be exact. Rebecca should be graduating in about a month, by my calculations."
"Where are we in this future?" Jim asked. "What if we run into ourselves?"
"First of all, we're probably in college, so the chances of meeting ourselves here in town is slim. And second, I'm not sure how time works when traveling into the future."
"What do you mean? Shouldn't you already know all this stuff?"
"I know how to recite the spell. Not how the universe works. Listen, there are two possibilities. 'A', it's just as I said, since this is two years in the future, we're probably in college, miles away. Or 'B', we don't exist in this future, because we disappeared from the world when we transported here. Either way, we shouldn't have to worry about running into ourselves."
"Well, I hope you're right," Jim said.
