Tony, a friend of Jim and Rick's, approached them inside. "Dude, who's your date?"
"Oh, this is ... Jamie," Rick said, pausing just for a second to make up a name. He couldn't call his date Jim.
"Totally hot," Tony said, with a leering smile. He had a hard time keeping thoughts to himself, especially when they were inappropriate. But Tony didn't really care.
"My date, Tony. Not yours."
"Huh? Oh, yeah."
Jim was uncomfortable with Tony staring at his "new" breast cleavage. So Jim coughed, to hopefully break him out of his trance.
When he did, he looked back at Rick. "I thought you weren't coming to this. Your parents ..."
"There was a change of plans."
"Well, good for you, dude. I'd hate to have to go to this thing with just Jim."
That got Jim's attention. What did he mean by that?
"But now that you're here, the party can really get started."
After Tony bounced away, Jim turned to Rick. "What the hell is this?" He was about to continue, but paused after he heard his girly voice.
"What are you talking about?"
"Did Tony just say that he doesn't like me?"
"Can we not talk about this right now?"
"So it's true?" Jim couldn't believe it. He had been friends with both Tony and Rick since they were in grade school.
"Can we just enjoy the dance, Jamie?" Rick calling him Jamie irritated him.
"How can I enjoy the dance if I know that one of my best friends hates me?"
