By that time, they had made it to the car, and they got in. Rebecca agreed that the park would be nice. "After all," she said, "The weather's beautiful."
After walking for a bit, towards the lake, they settled down with their backs to a tree.
"So why haven't I heard from Rick about you dating anyone before, Jim?"
"Well, you know Rick, if it doesn't involve his love life, it isn't important. Besides, he's the one of us that's always looking. So if we both see someone, he almost always sees her first."
Rebecca giggled a bit at this. "I guess so. You know," she giggled again, "He's still a virgin."
"No way! What about him and Caroline Bingley last year."
"I don't know all the details, but I'm pretty sure they're both lying. I overheard her trying to give details one time to some of her friends, and I know from walking in on him one time that her details didn't match the reality. I, ahh... didn't tell them why I was laughing."
Jim laughed too, at that. "Well, he definitely talks a good game. And plays one, come to that, at least as much of it as I've seen. I guess he must get throw out a lot trying to steal third."
She giggled again. "From what I heard, at least one time the ball hit him in the head when he tried. And knocked him out."
Chuckling again, Jim sallied, "That must have been Mary Lukas. I wondered what happened with her. Rick wouldn't say anything about it, except that she was frigid."
They talked a bit more, but all the excitement of the dance and the rest of the day was finally catching up to Jim. He woke up an hour later, finding Rebecca resting with her head on his shoulder. When he realized that, he tried to not to disturb her.
Then he wrapped his arm around her; when she responded by snuggling a little closer, he got a bit bolder. With his heart hammering in his ears, he reached his head down to put a soft kiss on her lips.
She slowly stirred, and said, "Mmmm... I'll put that at the top of my list of pleasant ways to wake up."
"It's the least I could do to try to make up for falling asleep on you earlier. I'm very sorry about that. I hadn't realized how tired I was from the dance and from our running around, earlier."
She answered, "I'll forgive you, if you bring those lips down here again. M... mmmmm." They kissed again, much more lingeringly.
When they finally broke apart, Jim asked, "I didn't ask before. Does six sound good for dinner?"
"Isn't that kind of early," Rebecca asked, in turn.
"Well, I'm trying to figure out how to avoid awkwardness with your brother. If I take you home relatively early, he won't be questioning why you didn't call home to get a ride, instead of waiting for me & Beth."
By this time, they had gotten to the car, and were driving towards the mall.
