"I will," Jim assured him.
With that, Rick left the room. Jim waited a couple of minutes to make it look good, and then walked out, and over to Rebecca's room. Seeing the door open, he poked his head in, and said, "Rebecca?"
She turned from where she was seated at her desk, and looked him over. Getting up, she said, "So where do you know Beth from?"
"I met her at the Spring Fling dance a couple of weeks ago."
"Oh, you're the one she was dancing with, there? You two made quite a scene."
"You weren't there, were you?" Jim asked.
"Of course not, but it's not every dance that has two gorgeous girls slow-dancing together. People talk, you know," she averred.
"Oh no," Jim said to himself, quietly. "I hope they haven't been talking too much," he continued, in a normal voice.
"Where have you been? I hardly heard people talk about anything else for a week afterwards." Switching gears, she said, "And where are you from, anyway? I can't believe I don't recognize you. What'd Rick do to get lucky enough to find you?"
As they left, he gave her roughly the same story he'd given Beth. As for meeting Rick, she made something up about meeting in class, and Rick making her laugh enough that she gave him a chance.
By the time they'd gotten through all that, they arrived at the restaurant. "She might be a few minutes," Rebecca told her. "Why don't you sit down over there." So saying, she disappeared into the bathroom.
