They stayed to the side for a bit, chatting, and getting to know one another. It seemed like there was an endless stream of guys coming over to talk to them, but they found time to talk between. Both seemed happy to just spend time with each other. He learned that Beth had an older brother who frequently annoyed her, but who had a friend that she really liked. He also found out that she was a junior, like Rebecca, and was in several of the same classes as her.
He, in turn, made up a little bit about his family getting there, but stayed as close as he could manage to the truth. In fact, pretty much what he told her was the truth, just shifted in time about ten years.
And when they started talking about hobbies, it turned out that they were both into music, so they spent a while snarking about the music (neither was a big fan of the 80's, while the DJ seemed enthralled with that period).
After a bit, out of nowhere, Beth asked Jim, "So when do you have class in the renovated area?"
"What are you talking about, Beth?"
"Fine, be that way. Mine is fifth period."
Thinking back to what Rick said earlier, he improvised, "I go there seventh period."
"I knew it!" she squealed, and gave him a hug. "Maybe we can compare notes later. For now, though, do you want to dance?"
Dazed at how fast she shifted gears, all he could manage was a highly
articulate, "What?"
"You know, dance. Move to music. Follow the beat. Syncopate steps. That
sort of thing."
