Rick closed his eyes and murmurred a barely audible chant while making strange gestures with his hands. Jim rolled his eyes and paced about the room while his "magical" friend hammed it up.
"I can't believe that I am humoring him," thought Jim. But just as that thought passed through his mind he felt a sudden sense of disorientation as the room smeared together like a running oil painting. Jim closed his eyes trying to ignore the crazy feeling of falling but he could still feel his body inexplicably move through space. A sudden jolt went through him as he felt his feet hit the ground. He opened his eyes to see that he was no longer in Rick's house but behind the high school cafeteria. Jim quickly looked behind him to see that the sun was now setting even though it was morning when he was in Rick's room a few seconds ago.
"What just happened," asked Jim with an impossibly puzzled expression plastered on his face.
"I used a translocation spell to teleport us to the high school, which you can plainly see. But to give it a little pizazz I added a little Doc Brown to it by also reciting a time reversal spell at the end of my chanting. What can I say, you wanted proof so you got it."
"So we are in the past?"
"Yep. Two weeks in the past to be exact. Tonight's the Spring Fling Dance, I missed it the first time because I had to go out of town with my parents so I decided to travel back here at this time to have a go at it."
"Well what about me," inquired Jim. "I can't go in there, I actually attended the dance two weeks ago. There can't be two Jims walking around in there at the same time. On top of that, won't people be talking to your past self about the dance tommorrow since they saw you here. Your past self won't know what they are talking about since he didn't attend."
"Don't worry, I'm way ahead of you on the whole time paradox thing. I've cast a 'blend in' spell on the both of us along with the translocation and time reverse spell. Once we get within 10 feet of a group of people our bodies and clothes will change so that we will blend in with the crowd so we will look like two completely different teenage guys. We'll just tell everybody that we are new students, then once we return to our regular forms the people we interacted with will slowly forget about us ever being at the dance just like the 'blend in' spell dictates. Now the plan is for us to split up and go in by ourselves. No offense but I don't need you to be a cock blocker by hanging around me and distracting me from the ladies. We'll both meet back here at 11, change back and then go back to our present. Now do you have any worries?"
"Not really, it actually sounds pretty cool," said Jim with a slightly sheepish tone. "I didn't mean to be a dick earlier when I didn't believe you. Sorry."
"It's alright, having a warlock for a friend is a little hard to swallow."
The two then made their way towards the side doors leading to the gym. Both were more than a little excited at what the night had in store for them.
"Oh shit, I almost forgot some vital info about the 'blend in' spell," said Rick who slapped himself on the forehead. "First, don't get close to any groups of teachers or chaperones unless you want to spend the night as a 36 year old woman. After you've changed it doesn't matter who you hang out with, but until then watch who you get close to because you will change to blend in with that particular group. So you might want to avoid the geek groups until you've changed also. Second, I know that this won't be a problem with you but don't stand out alot. The whole purpose of the spell is to blend in, so when you draw alot of attention to yourself reality starts to incorporate your new form into it. People will start to have previous memories of you in that form and the world will begin to change to reflect that you always existed like that. It makes changing back hard if not impossible in extreme cases, but don't worry those cases are rare and you are as plain as it gets so just relax and have a good time."
Rick stopped as he spotted a group of football players walking towards the entrance.
"Aha, there's my ticket in. I'll see you after the dance or maybe I'll be able to deduce who you've changed into once we are inside. Either way we'll exchange stories once we get back to the present. Later." Rick ran off to get wihin range of the football players in order to set off his change into a new form. Jim tried to keep his eye on him to see what he would look like once he changed but he was quickly lost once he entered the group of athletes. The "blend in" spell had earned it's name.
"Oh well, I better get changed as well before too many people see me here,
including my past self," thought Jim as he looked for his chance to enter the dance incognito.
