"Hello?" Jim groggily responded.
"Jim? Where are you?" The voice on the line was his girlfriend, Rachel. Jim's heart chose that moment to drop into his stomach.
"Um...I..."
"Did...did you just wake up? God damn it, Jim! You said things were going to be different."
Jim had no response.
"Nothing to say? I honestly can't believe you'd do this. I've been sitting here alone for twenty minutes. I figured you got caught in a traffic jam or...or something! Guess that's what I get for giving you the benefit of the doubt." Jim thought he heard a choked back sob.
"Look, I'm sorry Rachel. I promise-"
"No. That's what you said last time. I can't do this anymore. I'm sorry James. We're over."
"But-"
"Just shut up. And I've got a little advice. Just fucking try for once in your life."
The line went dead. Jim dropped the phone. Yeah, they'd had fights before. In fact just a few days ago. But after all the effort it had taken just to get her to meet him again, he thought she really meant it this time. He glanced at the clock. Twelve thirty. He'd overslept. Again.
