Jon rushed through his front door just in time to hear the phone starting to ring.
He picked it up. It was Karyn. Jon let out a sigh of relief - at least the second wish had worked.
"Hey, Jon. I know you don't get along too well with Sarah and the other cheerleaders, but I was wondering if maybe you wanted to come with us to the mall anyway. What do you think?" Her voice had changed in subtle ways.
"Uh, sure," Jon replied. "Let me just get back to your place and ..."
"Oh, I can just pick you up myself. No need to use that old beat up car you have."
Beat up car? It was only five years old.
"So, I'll see in a few minutes, kay?" Karyn said, then hung up.
Ending a sentence with "kay" was something that Sarah did a lot. And what was with that line about Jon having an old beat up car? Karyn was obviously still friends with him, but she had a more demeaning tone than usual. Could that be because she was more like Sarah now?
He wondered what else about her was more like Sarah. And a few minutes later, when she showed up at his house, he got his chance to see.
