"Jon, we need to talk." It was my Mom, and she looked more serious than I could ever remember her being.
I quickly stashed the stone under my pillow, "Umm...all right Mom."
She coughed, "Jon, that Karyn girl was here. She wanted to see you."
I nodded, "I wondered what waS going on down there. Did you finally see reason?"
Her nostrils flared and her eyes narrowed, "See reason, Jon? After what happened two weeks ago."
I decided to take a chance, "You keep bringing that up Mom, and I don't see what the big deal was!" I only half faked the irritation in my voice.
"BIG DEAL? Jon!" Mom sighed exasperatedly and shook her head, "Jon, you and Karyn were in that pool, by yourselves and nothing but the clothes you were born in!" she took in another breath, "And then, how do we find out? Not by you coming to us and telling us what was going on, but by my co-worker bringing in a picture of you and her on the beach naked."
"Mom...we didn't DO anything." I said defensivly. I wasn't entirely sure if that was true.
"That picture says otherwise, Jon! And what did you just hide there!" she stormed over and picked up my pillow.
And there was the stone.
Mom took one look at it and then looked at me, "It was Grandpa's...." I managed.
"Dad....gave you...that..." her tears welled up, "Just...do your homework, Jon." she fled.
