Katie walked towards the front door of the very nice, if small, house. With how affluent the neighborhood was, she assumed that maybe only one person lived here, and she was right. Ringing the doorbell, the door opened a moment later, revealing an attractive mid-thirties woman wearing an MIT T-shirt and yoga pants. Katie had never met this woman before, but from the information she gathered on the way over in the van, this woman's name was Denise Brewster and she was the head of R&D at the Lake Point branch of McMillan Tech Industries. It was her ID and key-fob that they needed. Katie still wasn't sure what they were planning on stealing, but it was located at the local McMillan Tech branch on the north side of town. Probably some prototype invention that was worth millions, she supposed.
"It's a little late to be delivering packages, don't you think?" Denise asked. But then something bothered her. First, the woman delivering the package didn't look like a delivery-person. And second, the package itself looked like just a cardboard box with no stickers or markings of any kind. There wasn't even any tape on it.
As if on instinct, Katie opened the box and pulled out a rag that was inside. It was at this time when a memory or maybe just knowledge came to mind. That rag was covered with chloroform. She was supposed to use it on Denise to knock her out. Unfortunately, Katie hesitated long enough to allow Denise to realize what it was, causing her to turn and run further into her house.
Frustrated that things weren't happening as smoothly as Katie had planned, or rather as Kat had planned, Katie ran after her.
Back in the van, Jack looked through the windshield at the house. "Where she go?" he asked. "What da hell she doin'?"
"Fuck if I know," Sophia said, still sitting in the driver's seat. Her role in the crew was the getaway driver. She was also an accomplished car thief, not to mention Kat's best friend. Her and Kat did everything together.
"Maybe one of us should go in there and ..." Devon suggested, making a hand movement towards the door.
"Keep yo ass in here," Jack said. "Kat's got this."
In the house, Katie chased Denise towards what she thought might have been a panic room, but the moment Denise touched the handle of the door, there was a zap of electricity, momentarily fazing her. Katie used the opportunity to use the rag on her, but was confused a moment later. The woman wasn't Denise. It was Sophia!
Back in the van, Denise was bewildered. How did she get outside her house and into this van? She turned and saw a muscular black man and a white guy with long scraggly hair and became frightened, thinking that they were going to do her harm. "Wh-who are you? What do you want?"
Jack and Devon were confused by her, to say the least. "What you trippin' on, girl?" Jack asked.
"Yeah, what's wrong, Denise?" Devon asked.
"How do you know me?" she asked.
"Know you? You part of dis crew," Jack said. Then he turned and looked out the window again. "What's takin' Kat so long? She shoulda knocked dat bitch out already."
"Now can I go in and help?" Devon asked.
"I think we all should," Jack said, thinking something must have gone wrong. And he was definitely right about that. Sophia and Denise had just swapped places. So now, in the new reality, Sophia Mendez was the head of R&D at McMillan Tech, and Denise Brewster was a car thief, getaway driver, and Kat's cellmate from prison.
Jack and Devon jumped out of the van and rushed into what was now Sophia's house, leaving Denise sitting behind the steering wheel, trying to wrap her mind around how any of this could be happening. Not only was she suddenly somewhere else, but her clothing was different and ... were those tattoos? The light was dim, but she was sure that her arms were covered with tattoos. How did that happen?
