"She's dating Jason Knight," Karyn said over the phone.
"The track star?" Jon asked.
"Okay, so he hasn't changed either," Karyn realized.
"Maybe it's just Sarah and this Dani girl who are different," Jon said. "I mean, it's not like you could tell me if there might be someone else. After all, you didn't hear the wish. You don't remember how things were before."
"Why don't you just wish to know who's different?" Karyn asked. She heard a slapping sound over the phone. "Jon, are you okay?"
"Sorry, Karyn. I was just slapping my forehead. I don't know why I didn't just do that in the first place. I could just wish to know what my dumb wish did instead of just moping around worrying about it. Hold on a moment," he said, then took a moment to grab the stone. "Okay. I wish to know what my last wish did," he said, then paused. "It's not doing anything."
"Are you sure it's the right stone?" Karyn asked, with a chuckle.
"Of course it's the right stone. It just ... it's not granting my wish."
"Maybe it thinks that if you know the outcome of your wish that it won't be 'interesting'," Karyn suggested.
"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. But I don't have a better explanation." Jon audibly sighed. "I guess I'll just have to wait to see what's happening after all. I just hope that whatever happened to Sarah and that Dani girl isn't still happening. Maybe it's just me worrying too much, but I have a feeling that they're not the only ones who changed and that more will change too. I really feel stupid for making that stupid wish."
"Well, now we're even," Karyn said.
They said their goodbyes, then ended their call.
