Melissa screamed as she watched herself change. Allison, on the other hand, was trapped in stunned silence, unable to help her friend. But mainly unable to know how to help.
Melissa's pink tanktop stretched into a T-shirt and changed color to a faded blue, her denim skirt changed into a pair of tight jeans with a studded belt, and her 3-inch heels morphed into a pair of dirty old sneakers. Then, after her hair turned black, her hairstyle changed, resulting in her long hair hanging over half her face.
Then she stopped screaming, as her new emo mindset took control. She looked down at the floor, her hair hanging down, hiding more of her face. She seemed somber and defeated.
"Do you understand now?" Steve asked.
Melissa hesitantly looked up at him. "Yes," she said in weak voice. All of the trivial problems that she had suddenly seemed too difficult to deal with. So much so, that she felt as if she were in agony. She understood Steve and Jon's pain all too well now. Them cutting themselves seemed totally justifiable now. In fact, she felt like doing it to herself.
"Melissa? What ... what happened?" Allison asked, breaking out of her shocked silence.
"She's an emo, now," said the other boy (who was Jon, but Allison didn't know that).
"An emo?" she said, looking at her changed friend, not believing. And not yet putting it together that she may be next.
